Why I Chose Marbella to Work Remotely — And Why I've Never Left

People ask me all the time: why Marbella? Why not Lisbon, Bali, Tenerife, the Canaries? After all, there are plenty of places with sunshine and Wi-Fi.

Here's my honest answer, after more than 20 years of living and working remotely right here on this beachfront. Marbella doesn't feel like a compromise. It doesn't feel like you're roughing it for the lifestyle or sacrificing productivity for sunshine. 

It's the only place I've found where the two things — doing good work and living well — happen at exactly the same time, without trying. If you're planning a workation in Marbella, or thinking about a longer stay as a remote worker or digital nomad, this is everything I wish someone had told me from the start.

The rhythm of a remote work day in Marbella

My mornings usually go like this. Coffee on the balcony with the Mediterranean in front of me. 

A swim before 9am if the mood takes me — and it usually does. 

Then two or three hours of deep, focused work from the apartment. 

The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable enough for everything: video calls, large file uploads, collaborative tools, no drama. 

By 1pm I walk two minutes to grab something on the Paseo or settle into a café in the Old Town. 

I get more done between 9am and 2pm here than many ever do in a full office day elsewhere. Something about the light, the air, the fact that life feels worth living — it's good for the brain.

The apartments — a proper home base, not a hotel room

When we designed the Skol experience for remote workers and digital nomads, we knew it had to feel like home rather than a temporary stopover. 

Every apartment has strong Wi-Fi throughout, a sunny balcony with sea views, a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living area, a Smart TV, and a washing machine for longer stays.

One of the biggest advantages of staying with us is how close you are to some of Marbella's best laptop-friendly spots. Here are our personal recommendations, all tried and tested by us over the years.

Morning People is right on the side of Skol — specialty coffee, minimalist design, great music, and the kind of calm atmosphere that makes a morning of writing or planning feel effortless. 

Margot, on the Paseo Marítimo steps from our door, is a beautiful spot for a working lunch with sea views. 

SottoZero is literally next door — good coffee, indoor seating, and surprisingly laptop-friendly in quieter hours. For a plant-based café with large wooden tables and a genuinely calming atmosphere, 

Manuka is a five-minute walk west toward Plaza del Mar, or eight minutes east near Alameda Park. 

Kafein in the Old Town is a favourite for mid-morning productivity sessions — great coffee and a relaxed, unhurried pace. 

Cappuccino Grand Café on the Paseo is for when you want to feel like you're winning at life: full table service, ocean views, and surprisingly stable Wi-Fi. 

And Bodega del Mar, right across from Skol, is the one for late afternoon sessions — emails over a cold drink with the beach right there.

When you need a full professional setup — meeting rooms, hot desks, private offices — Our Space Marbella on the Golden Mile is about 20 minutes on foot or a quick Uber, and it's excellent. 

The Pool Marbella, 15 minutes away, is another strong option with a creative, startup-friendly energy.

Planning a longer stay? Everything you need to know about the Spain Digital Nomad Visa

Not an EU citizen? No problem. Spain's Digital Nomad Visa is one of the best things to happen to remote workers in years — and Marbella is one of the most popular places in the country to make use of it.

Introduced in 2023, the visa is designed specifically for non-EU remote workers and freelancers who want to live and work in Spain legally, long-term. You can stay for up to three years initially, renewable up to five years in total. The main requirements are a minimum income of €2,850 per month, proof that you work remotely for clients or companies based outside Spain, and either a university degree or at least three years of documented professional experience. You'll also need health insurance with full Spanish coverage and a clean criminal record for the last five years.

There are two ways to apply. If you're planning ahead from your home country, you apply through a Spanish consulate before you arrive — this gives you a one-year visa to begin with. If you're already in Spain on a tourist stay, you can apply from within the country within 90 days of arrival, which grants a three-year residence authorisation directly. The official starting point is the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For clear, step-by-step guides in English, both Global Citizen Solutions and Citizen Remote are excellent resources.

After work: movement, wellness, and why Marbella makes it easy

Close the laptop and within minutes you're in it — not just near it. 

A run along the Paseo Marítimo with the sea right beside you. 

A padel game (there are courts everywhere — this is Spain, after all). 

Beach volleyball on Fontanilla, which is basically our front garden.

A SUP session or an open-water swim before the sun drops. 

Marbella is quietly becoming one of Europe's best sport and wellness destinations — not just for the spa crowd, but for people who want to move, feel good, and recover properly. Yoga classes, golf courses, cycling routes up into the Sierra Blanca hills, or a day visit to Shanti Som wellness retreat fifteen minutes away in the nature park. 

The options are genuinely excellent, and they're accessible without a car. And here's what I've noticed over the years: when you move well, eat well, and sleep well, you produce your best work. Marbella makes all three absurdly easy.

Then there's the Old Town

When the evening cools down and you've earned it, walk ten minutes east and lose yourself in the narrow, flower-lined streets of Marbella's casco antiguo. Pull up a chair in Plaza de los Naranjos, order a glass of something cold and a plate of jamón, and let the evening go wherever it wants. 

The tapas bars here are the real ones — unhurried, local, full of conversation, and absurdly good value for where you are in the world. It's the kind of ending to a workday that makes you wonder why you ever lived anywhere else. Marbella's Old Town is one of the most beautiful and genuine historic centres on the entire Costa del Sol, and the fact that it's a ten-minute walk from a beachfront apartment with three pools is, frankly, ridiculous.
